Ductless Heat Pumps and Air Conditioners

Europe and Asia have been using what are commonly referred to as mini-split air conditioners also known as ductless air conditioners or ductless systems to provide heating and cooling to homes and commercial buildings since 1961 when Sanyo invented the first model.

In the U.S. we have been using these systems to cool computer server rooms in commercial office buildings for about two decades. With the addition of heat pump models we have been able to use these systems in homes and offices in applications where traditional systems are not the most practical option due to the benefit of duct work not being required.

Sanyo, Mitsubishi, Comfortaire, and Fujitsu are all among the brands we recommend because of their reliability and quality. Shown below are the most common variations on typical ductless systems, in this case representing the Sanyo line.

Ductless systems can be used to condition a space as small as 300 square feet up to a space as large as 1500 square feet and are available from 13 to 21 SEER. This equipment can also be "multi-zoned", with separate air handler units in up to three rooms. Units are shipped with a remote control and are also available with a traditional wall mounted thermostat.

These systems consist of a condensing unit matched with an evaporator which can be mounted on a wall ceiling or even recessed into a ceiling. The concealed duct system can be used in places where only smaller diameter ducting will fit. These systems not only provide air conditioning and heating, but also offer features such as dry (or dehumidification) mode, as well as a fan-only mode to circulate room air.

Some typical applications for mini splits are:

  • Homes where ductwork is impractical or impossible
  • Home additions or remodels such as sunrooms or bonus rooms
  • Partial or spot cooling (zoning)
  • Limited outdoor space
  • Home office
  • Historical buildings, Stone buildings
  • Replace window units
